A Vibrant Retro-Modern Dim Sum Experience: Swee Choon @ AMK Hub
Interior Designer's Insights
Stepping into Swee Choon @ AMK Hub, the atmosphere immediately hums with a nostalgic yet undeniably modern energy. The renovation breathes new life into the traditional dim sum experience, trading heavy, dated decor for a refreshing "retro-bistro" aesthetic that feels both trendy and welcoming. A striking turquoise-tiled counter serves as the shop's vibrant centerpiece, its cool tones popping against the warm, earthy texture of the pebble-wash flooring. Neon signage and soft, warm globes of light cast a playful glow over the space, creating an inviting "Simply Happier" vibe that resonates with everyone from busy commuters to weekend families.
The design is a clever play on spatial efficiency and visual charm. To cater to the fast-paced mall environment, the shop features sleek, wood-encased self-order kiosks that blend seamlessly into the wall, highlighted by modern blue neon accents. In the dining area, the renovation utilizes compact, light-wood tables paired with traditional-inspired stools, maximizing seating without making the space feel cramped. Glass blocks and open glass doors allow the shop to feel integrated with the bustling hub outside, while the interior's pastel pink and teal palette provides a distinctive, Instagram-worthy sanctuary for a quick bite.
For this project at AMK Hub, the challenge was to translate a heritage brand like Swee Choon into a high-traffic, modern retail format. We wanted to move away from the "old-school" coffee shop look while still honoring the brand's roots. We chose turquoise subway tiles for the counter to create a bold, fresh focal point that is easy to maintain and visually cooling. By using pebble-wash flooring, we introduced a tactile, heritage element that provides excellent durability and slip resistance—essential for a busy food and beverage outlet.
Functionality was integrated into the renovation through a "tech-forward" layout. We specifically designed the self-service kiosk zone with warm wood frames and brass-toned accents to make the digital experience feel more human and less clinical. The transition from the bright, neon-lit exterior to the cozy, thoughtfully lit seating area was intentional; we wanted to create a "pocket of joy" within the mall. Every material, from the glass blocks that diffuse light to the minimalist furniture, was selected to ensure the space feels airy, clean, and perfectly suited for the next generation of dim sum lovers.
