A Masterclass in Bold Geometry and Smart Functionality
Interior Designer's Insights
This HDB renovation breaks away from the conventional, embracing a high-contrast palette and dynamic geometric forms that turn functional carpentry into structural art. The heart of the home features a striking bumblebee-yellow and obsidian-black cabinetry unit, designed with stepped, staggered levels that create a playful yet architectural silhouette against the windows. This bold use of color is balanced by the kitchen’s transition into a more sophisticated, monochromatic theme, where dark wood-grained lower cabinets meet pristine white overhead units for a timeless, clean finish.
The design language extends into the private sanctuary of the bedroom, where efficiency reigns supreme. A custom-built platform bed is the centerpiece, ingeniously integrated with a dedicated study desk and floor-to-ceiling shelving to maximize every inch of the floor plan. By using a consistent warm oak laminate for the platform and storage, the room feels cohesive and grounded. Every corner of this home is a testament to how bold color choices and multi-functional carpentry can transform a standard layout into a personalized, high-energy living space.
The homeowner was looking for something truly unique—a home that didn't just feel "new," but felt architectural and vibrant. We decided to move away from safe neutrals in the main living area, using that vibrant yellow feature as a "statement piece" that doubles as a room divider and storage hub. The stepped design was a conscious choice to allow light from the windows to filter through at different heights, keeping the space feeling airy despite the bold colors.
In the bedroom, the challenge was the compact footprint. Instead of cluttering the room with separate furniture pieces, I proposed a holistic platform solution. By raising the bed and building the desk and wardrobes into the same structure, we eliminated "dead space" and created a cozy, nested feel for the work-from-home area. In the kitchen, we focused on durability and contrast, choosing a dark countertop to ground the space against the light walls. It’s a home designed for a modern lifestyle—bold, organized, and unapologetically itself.
