HDB Renovation

RESIDENTIAL

Industrial Simplicity: A Balanced Urban Retreat

Interior Designer's Insights

This HDB renovation leans into a modern industrial vibe, but it doesn’t feel cold or harsh. The space feels calm and open, thanks to a cool palette—lots of slate grey, crisp white, and warm oak floors that soften the industrial edge. In the living area, there’s a minimalist cement-screed wall behind the media center. It’s got texture, but it doesn’t shout for attention. The deep navy and grey console below adds just enough color to keep things interesting.

Natural light floods in, especially near the entryway, where a black-framed fluted glass gate keeps things private without making the space feel boxed in. Everything feels connected and bright.

Move into the master bedroom, and you’ll see the same clean lines. Sliding wardrobes, finished in matte grey, blend right in with the rest of the room. Cove lighting runs along the ceiling, giving off a gentle glow that makes the transition between walls and custom carpentry almost seamless. Storage’s been thought through too—recessed cabinets by the entry, shelves right by the bed—so there’s a place for everything without adding clutter.

This home proves industrial design doesn’t have to be rough or cold. With the right details, it can feel bold but also peaceful—a place you actually want to relax in.

The homeowner wanted a “modern sanctuary” that still felt open and airy, even with the usual HDB layout. So, we leaned into visual lightness—think slim carpentry and floating furniture that keeps the floor uncluttered. The cement-effect feature wall was something they really wanted. It anchors the space with just enough personality, so there’s no need to pile on extra decor.

Getting from the entryway into the main living area was a bit of a puzzle. We solved it by adding a custom fluted glass partition and sleek shoe cabinets. Now, there’s a proper foyer that feels separate but still flows with the rest of the home. Every built-in uses hidden handles, which helps everything look clean and tidy, never messy or busy. We mixed cool materials like cement and metal with wood-look flooring and soft LED strips to keep things balanced. The result? A home that feels both disciplined and inviting—exactly what the homeowner was after.
