Warm Linearism: A Study in Modern Woodcraft
Interior Designer's Insights
This HDB renovation leans into the warmth and character of timber, filling the space with a steady wood-grain look that feels open but still incredibly inviting. The design pulls everything together—full-height cabinets and media consoles don’t just sit against the wall; they almost become part of it. Light oak sets the tone, while bold black vertical lines break things up and give the carpentry a crisp, modern touch.
In the living room, a floating console with soft, under-cabinet lighting gives off this cool, “almost floating” vibe. Step into the bedroom and you’ll find wardrobes built right in, everything flush and neat, nothing sticking out or breaking the flow.
Every part of the place feels intentional. Custom storage hugs corners and frames doorways, making sure no space goes to waste. The private areas get warm parquet flooring, while communal zones switch to glossy tiles, but everywhere you look, those wood slats tie it all together. The furniture stays simple—think coffee tables with natural curves and sleek ceiling fans—quietly matching the clean lines of the built-ins. All these details work together to turn the typical HDB flat into a warm, unified retreat, where storage isn’t just practical, it’s the highlight of the design.
We wanted the whole flat to feel like it belonged together, so we skipped the usual mix of standalone furniture and went all in on custom carpentry from wall to wall. It gives the place a real sense of permanence—almost like the architecture itself is part of the furniture. We chose a light laminate with vertical grain, and honestly, it does wonders. The ceilings feel higher, and the rooms just seem more open, even though it’s the standard HDB height.
To keep the wood from feeling overwhelming, we added black linear handles and built in a few recessed niches. In the living room, we carved out a little display area right inside the storage wall—perfect for a coffee station. It keeps the counters tidy, which I love. The bedroom wardrobes have these tall, full-height doors, so your eye just glides upward without any awkward breaks. It feels calm, almost like a hotel.
In the end, the place works hard—there’s storage everywhere—but it still feels warm and inviting. It’s that sweet spot: organized, but never cold. Just right for city life.
