Bespoke Artistry: The Curated Library Retreat
Interior Designer's Insights
This condo renovation takes a plain corner and turns it into something way more interesting—a personal gallery and library that feels both inviting and refined. Here, everything revolves around custom-built shelves. Warm wood laminates line the walls, and every edge glows thanks to hidden LED strips. The result? The shelves don’t just hold books and objects—they light up the whole space, giving it real depth and a sense of rhythm.
Right in the center sits a dreamy, oversized landscape painting, set back into the woodwork. Asymmetrical shelves frame it, making even ordinary items look like they belong in a museum. The transition between functional storage and showpiece feels effortless. Rich oak tones tie the shelves to the existing timber floor, so everything feels unified. There’s a calmness to it all, especially with a round metallic sculpture placed in front of the painting—it creates this cool “frame within a frame” look.
Open cubbies give you plenty of ways to display books and favorite objects, while the lower cabinets keep clutter out of sight. It’s a great example of how thoughtful lighting and well-planned carpentry can turn a quiet spot into the most striking and relaxing part of the whole home.
The homeowner wanted a space that felt like a real sanctuary—somewhere art and books could live together, but still feel cozy and organized. So, we didn’t just build basic furniture. We treated the carpentry almost like sculpture. Instead of sticking to the usual bookshelf formula, we mixed up the heights and widths of the shelves. That killed any sense of sameness and turned the whole thing into this lively, custom “honeycomb” that feels thoughtful and unique.
Getting the lighting right was a whole other challenge. We wanted the shelves to look like they floated on a soft, glowing light. That meant carving out hidden channels for the LEDs, so you get this calm, ambient effect without any harsh glare. We placed the client’s favorite artwork right in the middle, which really grounds the space and lets the warm wood pick up on the golden tones from the painting. In the end, the whole wall feels like a personal gallery—showing off the homeowner’s style, making the most of the vertical space, and turning the room into something that’s truly theirs.
